Heavy Bleeding Q&A

What is heavy bleeding?

Although heavy menstrual bleeding can occur anytime in your life, many women experience heavier periods starting in their 30s and as they approach menopause.

Periods may last longer than seven days and/or produce an abnormal amount of blood loss. Heavy bleeding is a hassle for your daily life and can cause emotional stress, fatigue, and even anemia if left untreated.

When should I seek treatment for heavy bleeding?

Heavy bleeding may cause physical, emotional, and social problems in your life. You should seek treatment if you’re experiencing issues that include:

  • Periods lasting for longer than seven days
  • Needing to change a pad or tampon every hour, for several hours
  • Doubling up on pads
  • Waking up during the night to change a tampon or pad
  • Blood clots in your menstrual flow
  • Nausea, fatigue, or headaches
  • Painful cramps
  • Missing social, work, or athletic events
  • Avoiding sex
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Lack of confidence

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, reach out to Antheia Gynecology to discuss what heavy bleeding treatment option is right for you.

What are my treatment options for heavy bleeding?

Antheia Gynecology has an individualized approach to treating abnormal bleeding, and you receive a complete evaluation before discussing the noninvasive and traditional options for treatment.

Your OB/GYN may recommend anti-inflammatory drugs to help with painful cramps, headaches, or other symptoms of heavy periods. Depending on your situation, you may also benefit from one of the following heavy bleeding treatments.

Hormone therapy

Birth control pills and hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) may reduce the amount of menstrual flow, as well as the length of your periods. You may also receive hormone therapy with progesterone.

NovaSure® endometrial ablation

Antheia Gynecology offers the NovaSure® endometrial ablation procedure, which is safe, quick, and for 77% of women, menstrual bleeding is successfully reduced or stopped within one year.

NovaSure is a great option if you are looking to avoid a hysterectomy and do not have plans for children in the future. The procedure occurs in-office, normally takes no more than five minutes, and many women experience little to no pain during the procedure.

Your OB/GYN uses the NovaSure device to permanently remove the cells that form a lining in your uterus, which stops the re-growth of your uterine lining. This can stop your period permanently.

You can go home immediately after the procedure and can expect to return to work and daily activities within the next 24 hours.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is an operation to remove your uterus and, in some cases, other reproductive organs, and Antheia Gynecology offers a minimally invasive approach to the procedure that only requires a few tiny incisions.

Minimally invasive robotic surgery is an advantage because it reduces complications that may arise from having a hysterectomy, and allows for a faster recovery period.

If you do require a more traditional open surgery, your OB/GYN works to maintain as much healthy tissue as possible, and leave a small incision line.
